Breaking the 4th Wall is defined as the act of a character in a film, TV show, comic or videogame to make any reference to the fact that they are fictional, i.e. "speaking" with the audience and readers. It is used for a comical effect, but is as effective in making the audience part of the fictional experience. Another way of seeing it is that there is an apparent "cameraman" taking footage of the events in those media, and interact with the characters therein.
